Our Story
Before there was The Phoenix Resort, there was The Paradise Hotel.
In 1970, Jerry and Linda McDermott built The Paradise Hotel, the second hotel on Ambergris Caye. The hotel served as a memorable vacation getaway for many of the first visitors to San Pedro, a popular hangout for locals, and a playground for Jerry and Linda’s daughter, Kelly.
Kelly was born in Belize City, raised on Ambergris Caye, and attended the San Pedro RC School on Front street. She went to high school in Houston (St. Agnes) and then graduated from the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown (Hoya Saxa!), before returning home to Belize in 2001.
In 2004, Kelly and her husband Mukul started construction on The Phoenix and eventually opened the resort in 2008, offering an even more memorable Belize vacation experience to a new generation of visitors to Ambergris Caye.
From our humble beginnings under a thatch roof in a sleepy fishing village, to becoming the top resort in vibrant San Pedro, the two constants have always been our committment to our team and our focus to providing great service and hospitality for our guests.
