The most popular snorkel destination is Hol Chan Marine Reserve, where thousands of fish live amidst the coral reef creating a beautiful underwater environment. Part of the reserve is called Shark Ray Alley and there you can safely snorkel with enormous sting rays and nurse sharks. Sea turtles, eagle rays, eels, and dolphins are some of the other larger sea life that can be seen on a snorkel along Belize’s Barrier Reef, in addition to the colorful and varied coral and many species of fish. The shallow waters make the experience easy for visitors new to snorkeling to feel comfortable in the water and enjoy themselves.
We work with great local guides to offer ½ day snorkeling trips to Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley, as well as ½ day and full day trips to other popular and less well known snorkeling destinations along the reef. Our full day trips can also be combined with fishing, a private beach barbecue, a visit to neighboring island Caye Caulker, or a manatee watch. Glass bottom boat options are also available for families with very young children.
All snorkeling can be arranged through our Guest Services department and charged to your account for payment at checkout.
Along the reef there are many exciting and different types of dive sites and our resort partners with a couple of highly regarded local dive shops to offer diving for guests. Guests typically choose 1-tank, 2-tank, or 3-tank dives, and have the option of diving in the morning, afternoon, or all day. We can also set up instruction for guests interested in starting or completing the certification process or taking a refresher course.
For advanced divers, one popular dive site to visit is The Blue Hole, considered by Jacques Cousteau to be one of the top five dive sites in the world, which can be visited on a day trip from San Pedro. The Blue Hole is part of the offshore atoll Lighthouse Reef and adjacent to Half Moon Caye. Other popular day trips are the offshore atoll at Turneffe Islands and Glover’s Reef.
All scuba diving can be arranged through our Guest Services department and charged to your account for payment at checkout.
Reef fishing is typically done either for a ½ day or full day, and can be combined with snorkeling or a private beach barbecue upon request. When reef fishing the fish most often caught will be snapper, jacks, barracuda, mackerel, and trigger fish. Guides are also happy to filet what you catch and our on-site restaurant Red Ginger will be happy to cook what you’ve caught for lunch or dinner. All fishing trips can be arranged through our Guest Services department and charged to your account for payment at checkout.
Flats fishing, either spin cast or reel, is typically done along the extremely calm body of water between the mainland of Belize and the western shore of Ambergris Caye. Flats fishing is all catch and release, and Belize is one of the few places where anglers have a chance to catch a grand slam in one day—tarpon, bonefish, and permit. These are typically ½ day or full day trips and can be arranged through our Guest Services department and charged to your account for payment at checkout.
Deep Sea fishing is also possible outside of Belize’s Barrier Reef when weather conditions allow. Fishing outside of the reef is typically done by trolling and fish caught can include grouper, tuna, wahoo, sailfish, mahi mahi, and marlin. These trips are typically full day and can be arranged through our Guest Services department and charged to your account for payment at checkout.
Another popular activity is sunset catamaran cruises, which are typically group trips where guests can enjoy complimentary drinks and light snacks while watching the Caribbean set over the Caribbean. Private sunset cruises can also be set up to celebrate a special occasion.
All of these trips and others can be arranged through our Guest Services department and charged to your account for payment at checkout.
Another popular adventure is the ATM Cave Tour, which takes guests deep into the ancient Maya underworld exploring a beautiful cave system and ancient artifacts and skeletons from many years ago. In addition, we can set up overnight trips to the famous ancient Maya city of Tikal, found right across Belize’s border in Guatemala.
The close proximity of these memorable jungle experiences to Ambergris Caye means that guest of our resort can experience the benefits of an island and jungle vacation. All of these trips and others can be arranged through our Guest Services department and charged to your account for payment at checkout.
