Overview

An award-winning Guest Services team is available every day from 6am to 11pm to set up exciting and memorable activities on the Caribbean and mainland.

Snorkeling

Just offshore of Ambergris Caye is Belize's 175 mile-long Barrier Reef—the second longest reef in the world—which provides some of the best snorkeling, scuba diving, and fishing in the Caribbean and in the world. The close proximity and beauty of Belize's Barrier Reef is a major reason why Ambergris Caye in considered one of the top snorkel and scuba destinations in the Caribbean.

The most popular snorkel destination is Hol Chan Marine Reserve, 15 minutes from the resort by boat, where thousands of fish live amidst the coral reef creating a beautiful underwater environment. Part of the reserve is called Shark Ray Alley and there you can safely snorkel with enormous sting rays and nurse sharks. Sea turtles, eagle rays, eels, and dolphins are some of the other larger sea life that can be seen on a snorkel along Belize’s Barrier Reef, in addition to the colorful and varied coral and many species of fish. The shallow waters make the experience easy for visitors new to snorkeling to feel comfortable in the water and enjoy themselves.

We work with great local guides to offer ½ day snorkeling trips to Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley, as well as ½ day and full day trips to other popular and less well known snorkeling destinations along the reef. Our full day trips can also be combined with fishing, a private beach barbecue, a visit to neighboring island Caye Caulker, or a manatee watch. Glass bottom boat options are also available for families with very young children.

All snorkeling can be arranged by our Guest Services staff and charged to your account for payment at checkout.

Scuba Diving

Belize's 175 mile-long Barrier Reef—the second longest reef in the world—provides some of the best scuba diving in the Caribbean and in the world. There are dozens of dive sites 10 to 20 minutes by boat from our resort’s location. The close proximity and beauty of Belize's Barrier Reef is a major reason why Ambergris Caye is such a popular dive destination.

Along the reef there are many exciting and different types of dive sites and our resort partners with a couple of highly regarded local dive shops. Guests typically choose 1-tank, 2-tank, or 3-tank dives, and have the option of diving in the morning, afternoon, or all day. We can also set up instruction for guests interested in starting or completing the certification process or taking a refresher course.

For advanced divers, one popular dive site to visit is The Blue Hole, considered by Jacques Cousteau to be one of the top five dive sites in the world, which can be visited on a day trip from San Pedro. The Blue Hole is part of the offshore atoll Lighthouse Reef and adjacent to Half Moon Caye. Other day trips can be set up to the offshore atolls at Turneffe Islands and Glover’s Reef.

All scuba diving can be arranged by our Guest Services staff and charged to your account for payment at checkout.

Fishing

The calm Caribbean waters offshore of Ambergris Caye provide great fishing opportunities. The Phoenix works with experienced local guides who specialize in either reef fishing or flats fishing, and our flats fishing guides can offer either spin cast or reel. All guides provide bait, lures, and equipment.

Reef fishing is typically done either for a ½ day or full day, and can be combined with snorkeling or a private beach barbecue upon request. When reef fishing the fish most often caught will be snapper, jacks, barracuda, mackerel, and trigger fish. Guides are also happy to filet what you catch and our on-site restaurant Red Ginger will be happy to cook what you’ve caught for lunch or dinner. All fishing trips can be arranged by our Guest Services staff and charged to your account for payment at checkout.

Flats fishing, either spin cast or reel, is typically done along the very calm body of water between the mainland of Belize and the western shore of Ambergris Caye. Flats fishing is all catch and release, and Belize is one of the few places where anglers have a chance to catch a grand slam in one day—tarpon, bonefish, and permit. These are typically ½ day or full day trips and can be arranged by our Guest Services staff and charged to your account for payment at checkout.

Deep Sea fishing is also possible outside of Belize’s Barrier Reef when weather conditions allow. Fishing outside of the reef is typically done by trolling and fish caught can include grouper, tuna, wahoo, sailfish, mahi mahi, and marlin. These trips are typically full day and can be arranged by our Guest Services staff and charged to your account for payment at checkout.

Boating

One of the most popular day trips we offer is a private boat or sailing trip on the Caribbean that combines snorkeling, fishing, and either an onboard barbecue or private beach barbecue of fish, lobster, or conch caught that day. These private trips can be customized to fit your preference, and additional activities like a manatee watch, swimming with sea horses, or visiting Caye Caulker can be added. We work with the top private guides and can offer these trips via a motorboat or via a catamaran. Group versions of this day trip on a larger catamaran are also available most days.

Another popular activity is a sunset catamaran cruise, which are typically group trips where guests can enjoy complimentary drinks and light snacks while watching the Caribbean set over the Caribbean. Private sunset cruises can also be set up to celebrate a special occasion.

All of these trips and others can be arranged by our Guest Services staff and charged to your account for payment at checkout.

Mainland Adventures

There are many exciting activities on the mainland of Belize that guests of The Phoenix can experience during their stay at our resort. We specialize in arranging private mainland day trips for our guests. We generally recommend doing a combination of two activities on one trip, and some of the most popular options are Cave Tubing, Zip Lining, visiting a Maya ruin, Horseback riding, a jungle river tour, or visiting the Belize Zoo.

Another popular adventure is the ATM Cave Tour, which takes guests deep into the ancient Maya underworld exploring a beautiful cave system and ancient artifacts and skeletons from many hundreds of years ago.

The close proximity of these memorable jungle experiences to Ambergris Caye means that guest of our resort can experience the benefits of an island and jungle vacation. All of these trips and others can be arranged by our Guest Services staff and charged to your account for payment at checkout.
