Just off the coast of our property lies Belize's 175 mile-long Barrier Reef—the second longest reef in the world—which provides some of the best snorkeling, scuba diving, and fishing in the Caribbean. The close proximity and beauty of Belize's Barrier Reef is a major reason why Ambergris Caye in considered one of the top snorkel and scuba destinations in the Caribbean.

The most popular dive and snorkel destination is Hol Chan Marine Reserve, where thousands of fish congregate among the coral of the reef in a colorful underwater environment. Part of the reserve is dubbed Shark Ray Alley where visitors can safely snorkel with enormous sting rays and nurse sharks. Sea turtles, eagle rays, and dolphins are some of the other larger sea life that can be seen on a snorkel or dive along Belize’s Barrier Reef, in addition to the colorful and varied coral and many species of fish. The shallow waters make the experience easy for visitors new to snorkeling in diving to feel comfortable in the water and enjoy themselves.

The Phoenix has partnered with a couple of highly regarded local dive shops that can certify guests over the course of three days. If you are already an experienced diver there are many different types of dives nearby to enjoy. One popular option is The Blue Hole, considered by Jacques Cousteau to be one of the top five dive sites in the world, which can be visited on a day trip from San Pedro. The Blue Hole is part of the offshore atoll Lighthouse Reef and is typically dived along with the Half Moon Caye Wall. Other popular sites include Mexico Rocks, and Banco Chinchorro , the offshore atoll at Turneffe Islands, and Glover’s Reef.
